Salah satu tujuan utama Knowledge management adalah menggunakan praktik dan teknologi perusahaan untuk memanfaatkan pengetahuan perusahaan. Sistem yang ada pada konsep Knowledge Management tradisional difokuskan pada kemampuan untuk menangkap pengetahuan dalam sistem terpusat dan membuatnya tersedia di kemudian hari. Namun, langkah pertama ini memiliki sedikit keberhasilan sehingga pada awal Knowledge management tampak ditinggalkan.
